Syllabus for English Composition 101– Winter Quarter 2019

Class begins January 2, 2019 and ends with the: (Final Exam: March 19 , 8-10 a.m.) Last class period is March 15.
Development of written composition skills: emphasis on both rhetorical, (the ability to use language effectively) and mechanical skills.Practice in the process of writing-prewriting, drafting, revision/rewriting, editing through a variety of formats.
Departmental Course Objectives:
Understand that writing takes practice and is a process
Practice a variety of writing formats integral to lifelong learning
Demonstrate skill in composing strong, vigorous, well-developed prose of interest to a reader and directed to a specific audience
Demonstrate organizational skills appropriate to the essay
Demonstrate an understanding of the general structure of grammar in American English as necessary
Understand and use word processing appropriate to English Composition 101
Understand the English Composition 101 departmental objectives
Understand the purpose of the Wenatchee Valley College E.C. 101 placement policy
Eligibility for English Composition 101:
Permission to enroll in English Composition 101 is determined by:
Recommended placement by qualifying Entrance test score or
Achieved grade of at least C in English 097
A USB for P.C. computer
Access to Canvas where grades will be posted for ALL assignments
Turn-It In to post papers (sometimes)
Paper for note taking and journal writing
Blue or black ink pens
A stapler--Can get an inexpensive one at the Dollar Store--A must-have!!!!!
A dictionary and thesaurus are needed
Successful College Writing by McWhorter (available in bookstore)
Writing Skills Handbook - Easy Writer by Lunsford--The edition available in the bookstore
Course Policies and Procedures:
Daily attendance is mandatory; roll will be taken.
Students who miss class accept full responsibility for any rules applying to grades.
After missing one class, the final grade will be reduced by one full grade. Being absent or late does not excuse students from completing class assignments or from submitting them when they are due. Students may not ask the instructor during class for missed assignments. The instructor is willing to help students understand assignments, but she will not give assignments when a student has been absent from class unless the student has made prior arrangements. The only excused absence is when a student e-mails ahead of time when a class is missed!!!! The e-mail will be answered by me, and this must be saved by the student for proof of excused absence!!!The student must get a peer to give him or her information he or she has missed after being absent from class.
No cell phone use in class! If your phone goes off in class, you owe the class nice, expensive donuts or cookies. It is the law!!!!!!
***NO COMPUTER USE UNLESS TOLD TO BE USING THEM FOR ASSIGNMENTS IN CLASS !!! IF FOUND DOING SO, A STUDENT WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE CLASS!! IT IS DISCOURTEOUS TO INSTRUCTORS AS WELL AS PEERS TO BE PERUSING A COMPUTER SCREEN DURING CLASS!!!*******

*****Writing assignments will only be accepted if late at MY discretion and only if the student has previously made arrangements with me!!!!!! All writing assignments are late if not submitted by class time on the day they are due. No make-up or extra credit work is available during this course.
A high academic performance is expected in students’ thinking and behavior.*****
Wenatchee Valley College’s 4.0 grade point average system applies to this course
Students are required to achieve a C grade or better in English Composition 101 to be eligible to enroll in English Composition classes numbered after 101
50% - Essays: These will be graded by the rubric given and explained.( Dicitonary Assignments and Turn-It-In Assignments are included here)
30% - Class participation (includes attendance, discussions, writing practice, exercises, presentations, and portfolios)
20% - Final
NOTE: The lack of class attendance may override the above percentages!
Students are required to take the scheduled in-class final examination for this course.

***Each writing assignment submitted must be accompanied by previously signed topic sentences and thesis statement. (If assignments are done on Turn-It-In, these requirements will vary.) All paragraphs and essays must be word-processed prior to submittal for the instructor’s evaluation.
In-class writing assignments are due at the conclusion of that day’s class. They may not be turned in late!
Course Instruction Sequence:
Week 1 –A writing sample will be taken
Class policies and procedures
Introduction to the writing process
Basic paragraph (topic sentences, supporting details, conclusions/Parallel to
Week 2 and 3 The Basic Essay (prewriting, drafting, revisions, peer editing, lead-ins, conclusions, patterns of development) Description Essay (organization, development, mechanics, flow, support, coherence, unity)
Week 4 – Example/Illustration Essay (appositives and/or relative clauses) (Also in class essay for mid-term)
Week 5 - Contrast/Comparison Essay (begin to explore research)
Week 6 - In class essay ( if time....Practice for final)
Week 7 - Argumentative Essay and extensive research with MLA citations
Week 8- Classification (also with research and citations) This is expository
Week 9 and 10 - Mostly Cause and Effect Essay (also with research and citations)
(throughout these weeks presentations will be given by the students)

Cheating is academic dishonesty. It can take many forms. One form is plagiarism: using someone else's words or ideas in an essay without stating clearly the author and title those words or ideas came from. Another form is lying: for example, asserting that one has prepared, or has prepared to a specific degree, when, in fact, one has not. The intent behind cheating is often to get the better grade without doing the better work.
If I begin to suspect that someone might be cheating--and sometimes I misinterpret a student's actions--then I will ask about it. Often what happens is that the student and I discuss the matter, and I learn that the student was doing something non-standard, but honest; and nothing else happens. However, if the inquiry does not resolve the issue, I have the right and responsibility to take firm action to correct the situation (Tiffany).
The "blood" which flows can well be the student's course grade. Some occasions of cheating call for even stronger responses.
Prevention: Plagiarism detection sites should be intimidating to any students who think their term papers are only a copy and paste away. Hopefully, viewing these sites will deter any of you from trying to plagiarize. Remember this important concept: Perception Determines Reality! Turn-It-In will be our main focus of deterring plagiarism!!!
